KIMBERLEY — Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul has officially launched the Operation Vala Zonke Pothole Patching and Road Maintenance Programme alongside a new R98 million Yellow Fleet at the Sol Plaatje Municipality. The intervention seeks to address deteriorating infrastructure and improve service delivery within the province’s capital and surrounding areas.
The newly unveiled Yellow Fleet comprises specialized machinery, including graders, pavers, and trucks. These tools are designated for road maintenance teams to increase the speed and effectiveness of repairs across the region. The launch was attended by provincial MEC for Roads and Public Works Fufe Makatong, as well as the executive mayors of the Frances Baard District and Sol Plaatje local municipalities.
According to the provincial government, the pothole patching and road maintenance phase will be executed over a three month period. This intensive work will cover all wards within the Sol Plaatje Municipality. Parallel to the road repairs, a cleaning programme will be implemented on an ongoing basis to enhance the aesthetic and functional standards of the municipality.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy known as the Rooting Out the Dust programme. Officials stated that the move represents a decisive step toward transforming Kimberley into a modern and economically vibrant city. Premier Saul emphasized that these practical interventions are necessary to address infrastructure backlogs and rebuild public confidence in government capabilities.
The project highlights a model of cooperative governance, involving multiple tiers of government to ensure tangible improvements in areas including Galeshewe and Roodepan. By equipping local teams with high quality machinery, the province aims to create a sustainable maintenance cycle that prevents further road degradation.
This infrastructure investment is expected to create immediate work opportunities for local residents during the three month implementation phase. The provincial government maintains that improving the quality of the road network is essential for local economic growth and the safety of all commuters in the Northern Cape.
