Speaking to reporters on Tuesday during a regular security meeting at the state secretariat in Alausa, Lagos, with the secretaries of local governments, the SSG offered this counsel.

At the 2020 demonstration, where young people called for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, thugs set fire to a number of public buildings, including a Bus Rapid Transit terminal. There were reports of casualties.

There are Nigerians who are organizing another demonstration that is scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024, and last until August 10, in response to the rising cost of life and staple goods.

The purpose of the “End Bad Governance in Nigeria” demonstration is to bring the suffering of the people to the notice of the Federal Government.

Salu-Hundeyin reassured citizens that they have the freedom to express themselves through protest and cautioned them against letting violent protests ruin the calm the state had been experiencing.

“This is the state that does not owe any pensioner a Kobo,” the speaker declared. Should you have retired today, you ought to have received your pension right away. The state government of Lagos is quite active.

“There is nothing wrong with folks using their fundamental right to protest. People should only be concerned about our desire to avoid violence because the current state of calm in Nigeria and the progress we are witnessing—especially in Lagos State—should not be interrupted.

“We do not want anything to interfere with the current prosperity of the state. We witnessed the devastation that occurred during the most recent protest (EndSARS). They are entitled, but that entitlement shouldn’t be used to destroy them.

The same worry was voiced by Scribe 57 and Ikeja SLG chairman Akeem Dauda, who called the planned demonstration “unnecessary” and mentioned that locals would be enlisted to dissuade participation.

We have determined that the protest is unnecessary and unjustified in view of the actions Lagos State, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has made over the past year. We fervently want to let them know that the protest in Lagos is unnecessary.

We shall teach our children, families, and communities the value of tenaciously defending the country we currently call home as members of the local government. “We will continue to inform the government about the desires of the people,” he said.
