Johannesburg — As South Africa hosted the G20 Leaders’ Summit for the first time, frontline police and emergency teams in Johannesburg and Cape Town continued to rely on their established radio communication networks to manage operations around the high-profile gathering.
While the national government oversaw all official communications for the summit, local agencies such as the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Emergency Medical Services and the Western Cape arm of the South African Police Service operated on their standard TETRA and broadband-capable Hytera radios. The devices form part of their daily equipment and were used throughout the event to coordinate responses and maintain situational awareness.
The two-day summit brought increased pressure to transport hubs, public spaces and traffic routes, with thousands of delegates and visitors moving between venues. Local responders used their existing systems to manage routine duties under heightened demand.
Mark Zheng, Managing Director of Hytera Southern Africa, said the summit highlighted the role communication tools play when cities face additional operational strain. “High-profile events place significant demands on frontline operations, and dependable communication is fundamental to effective coordination,” he said.
Hytera’s equipment has been in use in South Africa for more than 15 years, supporting public safety agencies, municipal services and conservation teams working in remote areas.
The summit concluded without major incident, and no significant communication failures affecting frontline units were reported.
