Four suspects have been arrested in connection with a blaze that destroyed the Germiston Home Affairs office earlier this week.
The fire broke out on Tuesday during a protest by Pharoe Park residents opposing eviction for unpaid rent.
In the chaos, a petrol bomb was allegedly hurled into the first floor of the Home Affairs building, with the flames spreading from a nearby block of flats.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber confirmed that the department had opened a criminal case and was working closely with the South African Police Service to secure convictions.
He described the incident as a direct attack on public infrastructure and vowed that those responsible would face the full might of the law.
Two suspects were apprehended on Tuesday, with two more arrested on Thursday. Authorities confirmed that all four individuals are South African citizens.
Despite the extensive damage to the building, Home Affairs has deployed mobile offices to ensure residents in the area continue to receive essential services.
