Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
According to reporting by The Guardian, UK authorities have been assessing allegations that Mountbatten-Windsor shared sensitive information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy.
In a statement cited by The Guardian, Thames Valley Police confirmed that a man in his 60s from Norfolk had been arrested on Thursday. Officers are also conducting searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk. The suspect remains in police custody.
The arrest coincides with Mountbatten-Windsor’s 66th birthday.
Mountbatten-Windsor, who previously held the title Prince of York, was stripped of his royal titles and patronages following public scrutiny over his association with Epstein. He was also required to vacate Royal Lodge, his longtime residence.
According to BBC, Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles III has initiated a formal process to remove Andrew’s remaining style, titles and honours. A formal notice has also been served to terminate his lease on Royal Lodge.
