The son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe was questioned by police following a shooting at a property in Hyde Park on Thursday.
Bellarmine Mugabe, 29, was seen in handcuffs inside the luxury home after members of the police’s Special Task Force and hostage negotiators responded to the scene.
Authorities were alerted after a security officer employed at the property was shot.
It is understood that Mugabe had earlier barricaded himself inside a room and refused to open the gates to the residence.
Specialised units were subsequently deployed. He later opened the gates, and both he and another unidentified 24-year-old man were taken into custody.
Police confirmed the pair were taken to Bramley SAPS for questioning in connection with the incident.
Officers remain at the scene as investigations continue. A police dog unit has been deployed to search the property for the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.
Investigators have recovered a cartridge, which will form part of the forensic investigation.
According to authorities, members of the diplomatic protection unit were patrolling the area when they were flagged down by a private security company reporting the shooting.
While police initially indicated that the victim was a gardener working on the property, it is understood that the 23-year-old man is a security guard employed by the family. He was rushed to hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear and are the subject of ongoing preliminary investigations.
