The CAF Champions League holders welcome the AFC Champions League Elite winners to Pretoria for the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00 SAST.

The two sides have never previously met, adding another layer of intrigue to a fixture that brings together the reigning champions of Africa and Asia.

For Sundowns, it is their first appearance in the current edition of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The Brazilians earned their place after defeating AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the CAF Champions League final to claim their second continental crown.

Sundowns Carry Strong Form

Miguel Cardoso’s side head into the contest having established themselves as one of the leading clubs on the African continent.

Sundowns began their domestic campaign strongly and have remained unbeaten in their recent run. Their latest outing ended in a 1-1 draw away to Chippa United on 12 September, following victories over Siwelele and Golden Arrows.

The result extended their unbeaten sequence to six matches, although the draw also ended a run of four consecutive victories.

Playing at Loftus Versfeld could prove significant. Sundowns are familiar with the Pretoria conditions and will have the backing of their home supporters as they attempt to claim another piece of international silverware.

The club’s continental experience is another factor in their favour. Sundowns have regularly competed against Africa’s leading teams and have now been presented with an opportunity to measure themselves against the champions of another confederation.

Al-Ahli Bring Toney Threat

Al-Ahli arrive in Pretoria with a considerably reshaped squad and a new coach in Marino Pusic following the departure of Matthias Jaissle.

The Saudi club have also undergone significant personnel changes, with Riyad Mahrez and Franck Kessie among the notable departures. Francisco Trincão has subsequently taken on greater attacking responsibility, while Ivan Toney and Galeno remain important figures in the final third. FIFA also highlights Eduard Spertsyan as another key addition to Pusic’s side.

Toney represents perhaps the most obvious threat for Sundowns.

The England international has been prolific since joining Al-Ahli and gives the Saudi side a proven goalscorer capable of converting limited opportunities.

However, Al-Ahli’s route to Pretoria demonstrated that they can also win without producing a dominant attacking display.

They defeated Auckland FC 1-0 in the opening match of their Intercontinental Cup campaign, with substitute Saleh Abu Al Shamat scoring in the 63rd minute. The result secured their place in Saturday’s African-Asian-Pacific Cup encounter with Sundowns.

Away Test Awaits Al-Ahli

Saturday’s match will present a different challenge for Al-Ahli, who will be playing away from their home supporters for the first time in this edition of the competition.

Their victory over Auckland was played in Jeddah, where they were backed by a large home crowd. This time, they travel to Pretoria to face an African champion on its own turf. FIFA has identified the change in surroundings as a significant new test for Pusic’s side.

The Saudi club will also need to respond to a demanding run of domestic fixtures, having suffered three defeats in their opening seven Saudi Pro League matches according to the supplied league statistics.

Cardoso Demands Maximum Focus

Cardoso has already warned his players about the consequences of losing concentration against opposition of this quality.

The Sundowns coach has pointed to a pre-season meeting with Al-Hilal as an example of how quickly Saudi opposition can punish mistakes. Despite being pleased with aspects of Sundowns’ performance, he felt his side were punished by two counter-attacks.

That experience has shaped his approach to Saturday’s contest.

Sundowns are expected to look to impose their possession-based game, but they will have to remain alert whenever Al-Ahli regain possession and transition quickly.

With players such as Toney, Trincão and Galeno capable of creating decisive moments, Sundowns cannot afford lapses in concentration.

Williams Highlights Clinical Edge

Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams has also emphasised the importance of taking chances when they arrive.

The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper expects a competitive encounter between two continental champions and understands that opportunities could be limited.

That makes efficiency at both ends of the pitch particularly important.

Williams and the Sundowns defence will have the task of limiting an Al-Ahli attack that has already demonstrated its ability to find a decisive moment, while the Brazilians’ forwards will need to make the most of whatever openings they create.

Trophy And Progression At Stake

The significance of Saturday’s fixture extends beyond simply advancing in the competition.

The winner will immediately lift the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, before advancing to the FIFA Challenger Cup.

There, they will meet the winner of the FIFA Derby of the Americas between Concacaf champions Toluca and the eventual 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores winners.

The winner of that Challenger Cup encounter will then face UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final.

That makes Saturday’s match a genuine trophy contest rather than simply another qualifying fixture.

History Against Global Opposition

Sundowns have previous experience on FIFA’s global club stage, including their appearance at the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup.

The current Intercontinental Cup, however, is a different competition introduced following FIFA’s restructuring of the annual global club calendar.

The new format brings together the champions of FIFA’s six confederations, with Paris Saint-Germain already assured of a place in the final as European champions.

Sundowns now have the opportunity to become the third successive African club to win the African-Asian-Pacific Cup after Al Ahly in 2024 and Pyramids FC in 2025.

Loftus Set For Champions Clash

Saturday’s encounter presents a fascinating contrast between two continental champions.

Sundowns bring home advantage, continental pedigree and strong recent form, while Al-Ahli arrive with a new-look squad, significant attacking quality and the experience of already negotiating their opening Intercontinental Cup fixture.

Neither side has faced the other before, meaning there is little historical precedent to separate them.

What is certain is what awaits the winner.

A FIFA trophy will be lifted at Loftus Versfeld, and the victorious side will move one step closer to a potential Intercontinental Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain.

For Sundowns, the challenge is to turn their African dominance into success on the global stage.
