Families of lost heroes finally get hope after decades
PRETORIA — The South African government has issued an urgent call for families of liberation struggle icons who died in Angola to come forward. This appeal marks the official launch of the Angola phase of the Exile Repatriation Programme, a major initiative aimed at returning the remains of those who disappeared or were buried on foreign soil between 1960 and 1994.
The project, announced during a media briefing in Pretoria, seeks to fulfill the long-standing recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, emphasized that the programme is designed to restore dignity to hundreds of families who have spent decades without answers. Angola has been identified as the primary focus of this phase due to the high concentration of South Africans who lost their lives there during the struggle for freedom.
Government officials have already located more than 400 potential burial sites across various regions in Angola. However, the recovery process faces significant hurdles. Teams must navigate difficult terrain, unmarked graves, and areas still affected by landmines. Minister McKenzie cautioned that while advanced forensic science and DNA analysis will be utilized, the deterioration of remains over time means some individuals may never be fully identified.
To ensure no family is left behind, the government has committed to facilitating “spiritual repatriations” in cases where physical remains cannot be recovered. This allows families to perform cultural rites and find closure even if a body is not returned. Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, described the mission as a national duty, noting that every piece of documentation or DNA sample provided by families increases the chances of a successful identification.
The programme is open to all South African families regardless of their past political affiliations. Applications can be processed through the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) online portal. For those requiring personal assistance, registrations are being accepted at Freedom Park, provincial government offices, and through various military veterans’ structures.
