Honeywell brings AI to Dangote with a $60m target

SHARE

LAGOS — Honeywell has announced an artificial intelligence platform for Dangote’s refinery that it estimates could generate more than $60 million in annual operational benefits. The projection depends on full-capacity throughput and excludes implementation costs, making it a potential gross gain rather than a confirmed saving.

The Forge Plant Cognition platform combines Honeywell’s industrial expertise with NVIDIA’s AI and computing capabilities and Dell Technologies’ infrastructure. Dangote’s Lekki refinery will be its first deployment, according to the announcement issued on 26 October.

Getting more from the refinery

The system combines operating data, engineering knowledge and models of physical processes to identify production constraints and anticipate problems. Honeywell says the aim is to help plant teams translate that information into operational improvements.

For Dangote, the commercial opportunity lies in improving the performance of existing equipment while pursuing a separate expansion programme. Honeywell is also supporting plans to increase the refinery’s nameplate capacity to 1.4 million barrels a day by 2028. The AI launch itself does not constitute that physical expansion.

Projected gains still need proving

Honeywell’s preliminary estimate exceeds 29 US cents per barrel. Actual results will depend on operating conditions, utilisation, crude feedstock, data quality and product margins.

The financial test will be whether measurable improvements outweigh the cost of implementing the system. Honeywell has explicitly cautioned that its projected benefits are not guaranteed.
