BEITBRIDGE — Border Management Authority (BMA) guards have arrested a Malawian national at the Beitbridge Port of Entry after discovering explosive cables concealed within his luggage. The suspect was travelling on an Interlink bus from Malawi when the illicit cargo, with an estimated street value of R100,000, was detected during a routine inspection on Sunday afternoon.
BMA officials discovered the explosive materials hidden inside a bag of rice. Following the discovery, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Bomb Disposal Unit and the Hawks were called to the scene to secure the explosives and initiate a formal investigation. The suspect is currently being held at the Musina Police Station in Limpopo.
BMA Acting Commissioner, retired Major General David Chilembe, highlighted the professionalism of the guards involved in the operation. He stated that the interception serves as a testament to the dedication of border officials in preventing the movement of dangerous and prohibited goods across South African ports of entry.
The interception raises significant concerns regarding the transport of hazardous materials on public transport and the potential for transnational organised crime. Investigators from the DPCI are currently working to determine the origin of the cables and their intended destination within South Africa.
This arrest follows a period of intensified security at the country’s borders as the BMA seeks to crack down on the illegal movement of firearms, drugs, and explosives. The authority has committed to strengthening intelligence led operations and risk profiling to safeguard the public from serious security threats.
