JOHANNESBURG — The South African Police Service has launched a high-level investigation following the attempted assassination of Major General Feroz Khan in Houghton. Khan was shot on Sunday evening on 3rd Avenue, prompting an immediate mobilization of elite law enforcement units to track down the assailants.

The investigation is being led by a multi-disciplinary team comprising the Gauteng Hawks, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, and the SAPS Detective Service. Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has further directed the Political Killings Task Team to join the probe to ensure all possible leads are pursued.

The timing of the attack has drawn significant public attention as Khan was scheduled to appear before the Madlanga Commission on 1 July 2026. Despite the proximity of the shooting to his testimony, SAPS officials warned against premature conclusions. Police stated it is irresponsible to speculate on motives or link the incident to the commission until detectives follow the evidence.

This targeted attack on a high-ranking officer raises serious concerns regarding the safety of witnesses and officials involved in judicial processes. The SAPS leadership has emphasized that any attempt to intimidate or silence individuals connected to the administration of justice will be met with the full might of the law.

The inclusion of the Political Killings Task Team suggests that authorities are not ruling out a coordinated hit aimed at disrupting state functions. Lieutenant General Dimpane has condemned the violence and assured the public that no resources will be spared in tracing and arresting those responsible for the shooting.
