A former top official at a Limpopo municipality and his wife have lost their R1.4 million Mercedes Benz GLE 350d Coupe after it was confiscated by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Kgantsi Malepa and his wife, Mmapule, were arrested in 2020, and the luxury vehicle was seized following allegations that it was purchased with funds obtained through corruption and extortion.
The Limpopo High Court in Polokwane, Acting Judge Marianne Bresler, ruled against the couple, confirming that the property shall vest in the State under the Prevention of Crime Act (POCA), subject to legal processes. The vehicle remains under a preservation-of-property order issued by the court.
The NPA has stated that the matter has been postponed to next month after the Malepas sought the recusal of the magistrate, which was dismissed.
The couple has since taken the review application to the high court, with proceedings scheduled for 14 October 2025 at the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
Investigations revealed that the Mercedes was purchased from Mercurius Motors using funds from Lesiba Mokhonoana of Lesibasiba Projects and Elvis Mohuba of Tomele Business Enterprise, both of which were service providers at Mogalakwena Municipality between 2016 and 2017.
The municipality found that no training or services were rendered by the Malepas’ companies, Katlego Internet Convenient Stores (Pty) Ltd and Unlimited Liquor Restaurant, and no agreements or invoices existed for the alleged transactions. The findings support claims that the vehicle was acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities.
