Defender Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive spot kick to send the Pharaohs through after Australia missed two of their four penalties in the shootout.

The victory sets up a mouthwatering clash against either Lionel Messi’s Argentina or tournament debutants Cape Verde in the next round.

Ashour Gives Egypt Early Advantage

Egypt made the brighter start and were rewarded after just 13 minutes when Emam Ashour headed home Karim Hafez’s cross to score his second goal of the tournament.

Australia had threatened early through Cristian Volpato, whose effort crashed against the crossbar, but Egypt gradually took control of possession and created the better openings.

Mohamed Salah, making his return after recovering from a hamstring injury, was closely marked throughout the opening half and struggled to impose himself on the contest.

Australia Fight Back

The Socceroos found their equaliser 10 minutes into the second half when Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with an inswinging free kick.

Australia’s leveller shifted the momentum, although Egypt continued to create the clearer chances. Omar Marmoush missed a golden opportunity shortly after the restart, while Patrick Beach produced an excellent late save to deny Ramy as normal time drew to a close.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in extra time despite Egypt finishing the stronger of the two teams, leaving the match to be decided from the penalty spot.

Egypt Hold Their Nerve

Australia coach Tony Popovic made a late tactical gamble by introducing experienced goalkeeper Mathew Ryan specifically for the shootout, but the move failed to produce the desired result.

Harry Souttar blazed Australia’s opening penalty over the crossbar before the next five spot kicks were converted, including a composed finish from Salah.

The decisive moment arrived when 18 year old Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar with Australia’s fourth penalty, allowing Abdelmaguid to calmly convert the winning kick and spark jubilant celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.

Historic Achievement

The victory marks another milestone in Egypt’s impressive World Cup campaign after they claimed their first ever World Cup win during the group stage against New Zealand.

While Salah endured a relatively quiet evening in open play following his recent injury, the veteran forward kept his composure from 12 yards before being overcome with emotion at the final whistle as Egypt celebrated a historic progression to the knockout stage.

The seven time African champions will now turn their attention to a potential showdown with reigning world champions Argentina, provided Lionel Messi’s side avoid an upset against Cape Verde in their Round of 32 encounter.
