Widespread anger has erupted in the Eastern Cape following reports that a Nigerian national was allegedly crowned as a traditional leader, sparking protests from residents, political parties, and traditional authorities.
Demonstrations took place on Monday in East London, also referred to as KuGompo City, after images and videos circulated on social media appearing to show Solomon Ogbonna Eziko being crowned as “Igwe Ndigbo” during a ceremonial event.
Political organisations including ActionSA, Patriotic Alliance, civic group March and March, and several traditional leaders participated in the protest.
Demonstrators carried placards, waved South African flags, and voiced strong opposition to the alleged coronation, describing it as unacceptable and disrespectful to local traditions.
ActionSA Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip criticised the development, arguing that there is no legal or constitutional basis for a foreign national to assume kingship or attempt to establish a form of traditional authority within South Africa.
Similar concerns were raised by the Patriotic Alliance, with spokesperson Steve Motale condemning the ceremony and urging foreign nationals to respect South African laws. He also noted that Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa had reportedly distanced itself from the incident.
Traditional leadership structures also weighed in, with Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa president Kgosi Mathupa Mokoena stating that legitimate kingship cannot exist without recognised traditional structures and communities.
Meanwhile, the AbaThembu Royal House has firmly denied any involvement in the alleged coronation. The royal house rejected claims circulating online that Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo had endorsed or granted royal status to the Nigerian national, labelling the reports as false and misleading.
The controversy has also drawn political attention, with the African Transformation Movement calling for a formal government investigation. The party warned that such incidents could undermine both the authority of recognised traditional leaders and the rule of law.
The issue comes amid renewed attention on Dalindyebo, who has recently made headlines for his political remarks ahead of the upcoming local elections. He has openly criticised major political parties and previously expressed support for the African Transformation Movement.
As tensions continue, authorities are being urged to clarify the legality of the alleged coronation and to ensure that traditional leadership structures are protected within the framework of South African law.
