PRETORIA — The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has issued an urgent advisory to South African citizens currently in the Middle East, urging them to take advantage of dwindling flight options to exit the region as conflict intensifies.
The government warning comes amid expectations of heavy attacks in the coming days. Authorities have advised citizens to prioritize their safety and depart while commercial travel windows remain available, as the regional airspace has become increasingly volatile.
DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri confirmed that while South Africa maintains strong diplomatic missions in the United Arab Emirates and Doha, the situation remains unpredictable. He noted that the airspace in the region frequently opens and closes, creating small windows for departure that citizens should monitor closely to secure flights back home.
According to the department, more than 6,400 South Africans have already registered their presence in the region through the government’s Travel Smart system. This high number reflects the growing anxiety among expatriates and travelers as security conditions deteriorate across several borders.
For those located in areas such as Bahrain, Phiri stated that the department is providing advice on alternative exit strategies, including the use of land borders where feasible. However, the primary recommendation remains for citizens to utilize any available air travel before further disruptions occur.
The department has also issued a directive strongly discouraging any non-essential travel to the Middle East. South Africans still in the region are encouraged to maintain contact with consular support services and ensure their details are updated on the official DIRCO website to facilitate communication in the event of further escalation.
The escalating tensions in the Middle East have placed significant pressure on diplomatic channels, as the South African government seeks to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad. The situation highlights the challenges of coordinating evacuations and provides a sobering reminder of the impact of regional instability on global travel and safety.
Public interest in the safety of South Africans abroad has spiked as families at home wait for news of their loved ones’ return. The government’s proactive stance in urging citizens to leave signifies the gravity of the security assessments currently being conducted by international relations experts.
