Students at Tshwane North TVET College are reportedly at risk of eviction due to alleged delays in accommodation payments by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
Several students claim they have received eviction notices and threats of being denied access to their dormitories at a private residence in Pretoria’s CBD if outstanding rent is not settled.
Despite these claims, the management of the private accommodation facility has denied any wrongdoing or threats toward students.
The issue follows a recent disbursement of R13,000 to students by NSFAS, marking the first payment some had received since the beginning of the academic year.
Many students say they had already used the funds before receiving confirmation from NSFAS that a portion of the payment was intended to cover rent.
Following this clarification, an arrangement was made for students to use part of their allowances to settle accommodation fees.
However, according to WhatsApp messages reviewed by Eyewitness News, certain students were directly contacted by the residence and pressured to make payments, reportedly starting from R1,700, out of the R5,100 intended for rent.
Student leaders have raised concerns about how students are being approached regarding these payments, with some alleging that demands were made in a forceful and unsympathetic manner.
The situation has left students anxious, fearing eviction and continued instability in their academic environment.
