The case involving alleged crime boss Vusimuzi Matlala has been postponed after the State requested additional time to assess submissions related to one of the accused.
Proceedings were halted as the prosecution indicated that representations concerning accused number five, Nthabiseng Nzama, are still under review. Senior prosecutor Elize Le Roux informed the court that further time is required to evaluate outstanding submissions from the defence before the matter can proceed.
Despite the delay, Judge William Karam signalled a willingness to move forward with pretrial proceedings for those accused who are ready to proceed.
However, the defence has pushed back against this approach. Advocate Anneline van der Heever criticised the State, arguing that the delays are unfairly prejudicing her clients. She maintains that the matter cannot advance to the pretrial stage while key documents remain undisclosed.
Van der Heever further contends that the State’s handling of the case is undermining the accused’s constitutional rights, particularly their entitlement to access relevant documentation contained in the State docket.
Five accused individuals are facing a combined total of 25 charges, which include money laundering and 11 counts of attempted murder. The case is expected to resume once the outstanding issues regarding the defence submissions and documentation have been resolved.
