Johannesburg – South Africa received a harsh reminder today of what it feels like to depend entirely on technology for day-to-day productivity. AI platforms, productivity tools, apps, and device troubleshooting systems went offline without warning after a major global outage linked to Cloudflare. The disruption triggered widespread panic, stretching from newsrooms to hospitals and even airports, halting operations for hours.
The outage affected major social media platforms, websites, and applications across multiple sectors, including OpenAI, Amazon Web Services, bet365, Canva, Spotify, Facebook, BrightHR, and X (formerly Twitter). DownDetector recorded more than ten thousand user reports related to Cloudflare failures within the first hour.
Cloudflare is a key internet infrastructure provider, operating primarily as a content delivery network and offering systems that help protect websites from spam attacks, peak traffic loads, and other threats that compromise performance. In a statement, the company said it was working to understand the full impact and mitigate the problem, with more updates expected shortly.
The timing of the outage is notable, coming less than a month after a significant Amazon Web Services disruption that brought thousands of websites to a standstill worldwide. Together, the incidents raise wider concerns about the fragility of global digital infrastructure and the risks associated with concentrated reliance on a few large technology providers.
For now, businesses and users wait for stability to return, while the outage stands as another reminder that even the most advanced digital systems can fail without warning and bring entire industries to a temporary halt.

Here is the message that Cloudflare sent out when the Incidence happened:
Our support portal provider is currently experiencing issues, and as such customers might encounter errors viewing or responding to support cases. Responses on customer inquiries are not affected, and customers can still reach us via live chat (Business and Enterprise) through the Cloudflare Dashboard, or via the emergency telephone line (Enterprise).
We are working alongside our 3rd party provider to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem.
