Cape Town – South Africa has secured a major agricultural breakthrough after its first shipment of locally produced stone fruit officially entered the Chinese market.
The milestone follows years of negotiations and compliance with strict phytosanitary requirements, paving the way for peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots to reach one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
Government officials and industry leaders have described the shipment as a strategic win that strengthens trade ties and expands export diversification beyond traditional European destinations.
Speaking at the event, Steenhuisen highlighted that the opening of this Chinese market is no longer just an aspiration, but a fundamental necessity for South Africa’s economic growth.
“Today, the Chinese market is a strategic necessity, not merely an opportunity for South Africa’s agricultural resilience. This is a milestone that Ambassador Peng and I have worked toward together, and today I am happy that we have realised it,” the Minister said.
Agricultural stakeholders believe access to China could significantly boost farm revenues, stabilise seasonal employment and reduce exposure to fluctuating demand in existing markets.
Trade analysts say the development may enhance South Africa’s competitiveness in high-value fruit exports, particularly as global supply chains continue to shift.
Further consignments are expected as exporters scale production to meet Chinese demand while adhering to quality and inspection standards.
