The new season brings another packed schedule, with 18 matches spread across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as Europe’s biggest clubs begin their quest for continental glory.

Two-time defending champions Paris Saint-Germain enter the campaign as the team to beat, with Luis Enrique’s side aiming to become only the second club in the modern Champions League era to win the competition three consecutive times.

However, standing in their way are several familiar European heavyweights, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

With the Champions League final set to be played at Atlético Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium next June, there is plenty at stake from the opening matchday.

PSG Chasing a Piece of History

PSG have established themselves as the dominant force in European football after winning the Champions League in each of the past two seasons.

Their latest triumph came against Arsenal in May, giving Enrique the opportunity to match Zinedine Zidane’s achievement of winning three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018.

Only three clubs have previously won the European Cup or Champions League three times in succession: Real Madrid, Ajax and Bayern Munich.

Enrique has opted against a major overhaul of his squad during the summer, instead making targeted additions while retaining the core of the team that delivered back-to-back European titles.

PSG face a demanding league phase, with Barcelona, Manchester City and Aston Villa among their opponents.

Their campaign begins at home against Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday, 9 September at 21:00 SAST.

Bayern and Kane Hungry for European Redemption

Bayern Munich will also enter the competition with ambitions of going all the way after falling short against PSG in last season’s semi-final.

Vincent Kompany’s side dominated domestically last season, winning the Bundesliga by 16 points while scoring a record 122 goals.

At the heart of their attack is Harry Kane, who enjoyed a remarkable 2025/26 campaign. The England captain scored 36 Bundesliga goals in 31 appearances and finished the season with 61 goals for Bayern across all competitions.

Now 33, Kane will be expected to produce at the same extraordinary level as Bayern attempt to turn domestic dominance into European success.

Their Champions League campaign begins on Thursday when they host Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt at 21:00 SAST.

Mourinho’s Madrid Revolution Faces an Early Test

Real Madrid have undergone another significant change, with José Mourinho returning to the club for a second spell.

The Portuguese coach has been tasked with ending two trophyless seasons and restoring Madrid to the summit of European football.

Madrid have also strengthened considerably, bringing in players including Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Yan Diomande.

The prospect of winning the Champions League in their own city adds another layer to their campaign, although the final will be played at the home of city rivals Atlético Madrid.

Madrid began their La Liga campaign with three consecutive victories but were beaten 1-0 by Real Betis on Friday, highlighting the work still required for Mourinho to turn an expensively assembled squad into a cohesive team.

Their European journey begins on Tuesday against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu, with kick-off at 21:00 SAST.

City and Porto Promise a Heavyweight Opening

One of the standout matches on the opening night sees Manchester City travel to Portugal to face Porto.

City have made a perfect start to their Premier League campaign, winning all three of their matches against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and newly promoted Coventry.

Enzo Maresca’s side now face a Porto team enjoying an equally impressive start. Francesco Farioli’s Portuguese champions have won all six of their matches this season and conceded just once.

Porto currently sit top of the Portuguese league and are targeting back-to-back league titles for the first time since 2013.

History, however, favours City. They are unbeaten in their four previous meetings with Porto, winning three, although their most recent encounter ended goalless in December 2020.

The two sides meet at 21:00 SAST on Tuesday.

Aston Villa Face Early Challenge

Aston Villa return to the Champions League as Europa League champions, but their domestic start has been considerably less convincing.

Unai Emery’s side travel to Club Brugge on Tuesday having collected just one point from their opening three league matches and remain without a league goal.

Villa also suffered a 2-1 defeat to PSG in the European Super Cup.

Their hosts, meanwhile, have won four of their five league matches and have been particularly strong at home, winning both of their home fixtures without conceding.

The teams are no strangers to one another. They met three times during the 2024/25 Champions League campaign, with Brugge winning 1-0 in the league phase before Villa responded with a 6-1 aggregate victory in the knockout stage.

Kick-off is at 18:45 SAST.

Como’s Remarkable Journey Reaches Europe’s Biggest Stage

Perhaps the most romantic story of this season’s competition belongs to Como.

Only a few years ago, the Italian club were competing in Italy’s fourth tier. After three promotions in five years, they finished fourth in Serie A last season to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Cesc Fàbregas will now lead Como into the competition against some of European football’s biggest names.

The club’s rapid transformation has been backed by Indonesia’s Hartono family, who purchased Como in 2019 and have continued to invest heavily.

The permanent signing of Real Madrid loanee Nico Paz in June underlined their ambition and suggested Como’s rise is intended to be more than a brief fairytale.

They begin their Champions League campaign away to RB Leipzig on Thursday at 21:00 SAST.

Spanish Depth on Show

Beyond Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, Villarreal and Real Betis will represent Spain in the league phase.

Villarreal finished third in La Liga last season to secure direct qualification, returning to the Champions League for the first time in more than a decade.

Real Betis, meanwhile, will make their first appearance in the competition since the 2005/06 season after qualifying through Spain’s additional Champions League place.

Both clubs face difficult challenges but have the opportunity to demonstrate the growing depth of Spanish football.

Villarreal begin away to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at 21:00 SAST, while Betis travel to Lille on the same night.

A New Champions League Chapter Begins

The league phase will run from 8 September 2026 until 27 January 2027, with each club playing eight matches before the competition moves into its knockout stages.

With defending champions chasing an unprecedented three-peat, Bayern seeking redemption, Mourinho attempting to revive Real Madrid, Manchester City facing another European test and Como living out a historic dream, the new Champions League season already has plenty of compelling storylines.

And with 18 matches across the opening three days, European football’s biggest club competition is wasting little time getting down to business.
