CapeTown – The city is facing more stormy weather following days of high winds and heavy rain that have caused displacement of hundreds of people, flooding, and uprooting of trees. Approximately 33,000 homes in informal settlements and suburbs have been impacted, leading to a significant humanitarian crisis.
Authorities are distributing essential items like meals, blankets, and hygiene packs to affected communities. The Western Cape Minister for Local Government highlighted the need for a coordinated response to address the situation.
Additionally, the Western Cape government warned of the risk of the Breede River breaching its banks due to high water levels from the heavy rainfall.
The Floriskraal Dam in Laingsburg is at 118% capacity, prompting alerts to downstream communities about potential flooding risks.
The South Africa Weather Service issued warnings of strong winds reaching 40-60 kph and wave heights up to five meters along the coast. Ships at Cape Town port were advised to secure moorings to prevent damage.
Despite the adverse weather conditions, some residents were seen enjoying the situation, with videos showing people playing in flooded areas and boogie boarding down wet hills.
