The City of Cape Town is grappling with widespread flooding and severe traffic disruptions following heavy rainfall on Tuesday, which is expected to continue into the evening.

Numerous roads across the metro have been submerged, with mudslides and blocked lanes causing major congestion in several suburbs. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary, as traffic conditions, especially out of the CBD, are expected to be extremely chaotic this afternoon.

Flooded Roads and Closures Include:

  • Nelson Mandela Boulevard (inbound): Flooding just after Newmarket Street has rendered the road hazardous.
  • N1 (inbound at Durban Road): Right lane closed due to water accumulation.
  • N2 (outbound):
    • Between Robert Sobukwe Road and Airport Approach Road
    • At Liesbeek Parkway, where the right lane is obstructed
  • Boys Drive (towards Kalk Bay): Partial flooding near the speed camera has closed the left lane.
  • Baden Powell Drive: Severely affected at multiple points:
    • Between JK Masemola/Macassar Road and the N2 (eastbound)
    • At Sunrise Boulevard (westbound towards Muizenberg)
    • Drivers are advised to proceed with extreme caution due to deep water and poor visibility.

Other Notable Trouble Spots:

  • Ou Kaapse Weg (towards Tokai): Heavy delays expected between the S-Bend and Steenberg Road.
  • Kommetjie Road: Waterlogged with limited visibility.
  • Main Road (Simon’s Town to Fish Hoek):
    • Severe flooding reported in Glencairn, where vehicles are turning around
    • Mudslides reported near Harbour Bay Mall and the Kelp Factory
    • Simon’s Town train station and Glencairn Beach area are completely submerged
  • Prince George Drive (Grassy Park to Lavender Hill): Overwhelmed by floodwaters.

Emergency services are actively responding to incidents across the metro, and flood-prone areas continue to be closely monitored.

Residents are urged to stay indoors, delay travel plans, and report any emergencies or blocked stormwater drains to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre at 107 (landline) or 021 480 7700 (cellphone).

While rain is expected to persist into Tuesday night, conditions are forecast to improve by Wednesday, which will remain overcast and windy. A clearer and warmer day is anticipated on Thursday, with no rainfall predicted.
