The chairperson of Parliament’s police portfolio committee, Ian Cameron, has called for an independent investigation into serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
During a press conference on Sunday, Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of being linked to a wider criminal network that allegedly involves politicians and senior members of the police service.
Speaking at a safety and security cluster briefing in Parliament the following day, Cameron said the claims highlighted deep-rooted problems within the country’s criminal justice system, which he believes undermine efforts to combat crime.
He stressed the need for urgent action, proposing the formation of an ad hoc inquiry or commission with a clear mandate and strict timelines to investigate the allegations thoroughly.
Cameron has also written to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, requesting an urgent parliamentary debate on the state of policing in South Africa.
