Sandton, South Africa – Former South African Deputy President David Mabuza has died at the age of 64. Affectionately known as “DD,” Mabuza passed away on 3 July 2024 in a Sandton hospital. While the cause of his death has not been publicly confirmed, his passing has been acknowledged by several media outlets and senior members of the African National Congress (ANC).
David Dabede Mabuza served as South Africa’s Deputy President from 2018 until 2022 and was the Deputy President of the ANC from December 2017 to December 2022. He played a significant role in shaping post-apartheid South African politics, particularly within Mpumalanga and later at the national level.
Born on 25 August 1960 in Phola Trust, Mpumalanga, Mabuza began his professional journey in education. He earned a National Teacher’s Certificate from Mgwenya College of Education in 1985 and later completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology through the University of South Africa (UNISA) in 1989. Before entering politics, he worked as a school principal and was known for his dedication to community development and education.
Mabuza’s political rise was marked by his influence in the ANC’s provincial structures and his eventual ascent to national leadership. He stepped down as Deputy President in 2022 following the appointment of Paul Mashatile as his successor.
His death marks the end of a notable chapter in South African politics, with tributes pouring in from across the country in recognition of his service and leadership.
