The Government of Botswana has rejected claims that the United States operates a military base at Thebephatshwa Air Base, describing the reports as misinformation.

Facility Under Full National Control

Minister of State President, Defence and Security Moeti Mohwasa clarified that the air base remains fully controlled by Botswana.

He stated that the facility is owned, operated and managed by the Botswana Defence Force, with no foreign military presence.

Concerns Over Misinformation

Government spokesperson Tuduetso Mokgosi warned that the spread of unverified claims could have wider implications for public trust and regional stability.

Officials stressed that misinformation, particularly when shared across borders, can create unnecessary tension between neighbouring countries.

Call For Responsible Public Discourse

Authorities acknowledged the importance of open debate but urged that discussions around national security be based on verified facts rather than speculation.

The government also called on media organisations and political figures to act responsibly when addressing defence-related matters.

Commitment To Regional Cooperation

Botswana reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic relations and promoting cooperation within the region.

Officials emphasised that transparency, accountability and mutual respect remain central to the country’s foreign policy.
