Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling on the R23 between Heidelberg and Balfour, especially between 18:00 and 22:00, as hijacking incidents in the area have sharply increased.
The infamous “Blue Light Gang” has resurfaced, using stolen or counterfeit police uniforms and flashing blue lights to impersonate law enforcement and ambush unsuspecting drivers. These criminals are heavily armed and pose a serious threat to public safety.
Delport Securitas reports that Toyota and Ford vehicles are being targeted most frequently, though no vehicle is entirely safe. The gang typically follows victims, activating blue lights to create the illusion of a legitimate police stop. Once the driver pulls over, the suspects launch a violent hijacking.
A motorist traveling from Standerton became the latest victim just after the Balfour circle. Believing he was being stopped by police, he pulled over, only to be forcefully removed from his vehicle. The hijackers dragged him into a nearby field, restrained him, and fled with his car. The incident was reported by the Standerton Chronicle.
Authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and verify the legitimacy of any unexpected police stops. If unsure, motorists should proceed to the nearest police station or a well-populated area before stopping.
Stay alert, trust your instincts, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately. Your safety is the priority.
