Capetown – SONA is one of the highlight of the country and one of the best times to generate content for media houses and clowns alike. This year, a statement from the speech by the Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga was quickly passed out as an error and hyped on social media. She spoke of the three Rs of education” reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic.
KFM show @therealwesside anchors took to social media to comment on the three Rs statement of Minister Angie Motshekga. According to the Video above, the minister quoted three Rs but used words with W and A in the list. They believed Writing and Arithmetic are not aligned to the three Rs as listed in the minister’s list.
They were not the only ones that believed Minister Angie Motshekga made a mistake. An Article titled “Warch: Angie Motshekga gives us the three Rs: reading, writing and arithmetic” was also published on News24 regarding the wrong spelling of the three Rs but hours later and the article has been removed from the website.
They laughed at her because they assumed she could not spell, but that was not the case. They tried to make her look foolish, but they looked foolish in the end. In this instance, apologizing was the correct thing to do.

The Etymology of ‘the three Rs’ is used because each word in the phrase has a strong R phoneme (sound) at the beginning. The term is ironic since someone with rudimentary language education would know that two of the original words do not actually begin with the letter R. The third R was more probably Reckoning, not as is more usually stated ‘Rithmetic. Reckoning was a Victorian term for mental arithmetic and had been in use as such since the 14th century.
