Pretoria – The office of Minister Jeff Radebe has refuted claims made during the interview of Deputy Public Protector, Advocate Kevin Malunga, for the position of Public Protector.
Radebe is the Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation and also the chairperson of the National Planning Commission.
Maluga’s interview was carried live on national television on 11August 2016.
During the interview process, portfolio committee member Phumzile Van Damme remarked that Advocate Malunga was advisor and speech writer to Minister Radebe.
“The office of Minister Radebe refutes the statement or any inference made that Advocate Malunga served as adviser to Minister Radebe or wrote any speeches for the Minister in any capacity,” said the Minister’s office on Friday.
The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services confirmed that Advocate Malunga has never worked in the office of Minister Radebe or had any dealings with the Ministry during his short stint as researcher in the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.
Malunga, however, was appointed as researcher in the Office of the Chief Justice on contract in 2010 and was part of the initial staff complement that provided administrative support the newly established office of the Chief Justice.
He was transferred to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development on 1May 2012 as researcher in the Policy Development Branch of the Department. He was subsequently seconded to the Marikana Commission of Inquiry in October 2012 as the commission’s spokesperson.
