Driver Dies After Repatriation Bus Crashes On N1 Near Beitbridge
A bus driver has died and at least 11 passengers were injured after a repatriation bus transporting undocumented Malawian nationals overturned on the N1 near the Beitbridge Border Post in Limpopo.
The crash occurred about four kilometres south of the border post while the bus was travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to the repatriation centre in Musina.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport, the bus was transporting undocumented Malawian nationals as part of ongoing repatriation efforts.
Department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said preliminary information suggests the driver lost control of the vehicle, with fatigue believed to be a possible contributing factor.
The driver was declared dead at the scene, while 11 passengers sustained injuries. The injured were taken to Musina Hospital for treatment.
Emergency services responded to the crash shortly after it occurred and assisted with rescue efforts before transporting the injured to hospital.
Traffic continued flowing along the N1, although motorists were advised to expect delays while emergency personnel cleared the scene and investigators conducted their work. Authorities said temporary road closures could be implemented if required to facilitate the recovery operation.
Police and transport officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. While driver fatigue is being considered as a possible factor, authorities said the investigation is still in its early stages.
The accident comes as South Africa continues an intensified repatriation programme for undocumented migrants. In recent weeks, thousands of Malawian nationals have been transported from various provinces to the Musina repatriation centre before being returned to Malawi.
