Eskom has announced an extension of its registration fee waiver for customers using Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) systems, including rooftop solar, pushing the deadline from 31 March to 30 September 2026.
The initiative, introduced in March 2023, removes both registration fees and the cost of smart meters for households with photovoltaic (PV) systems of up to 50kW. The extension means qualifying customers can continue to save up to R9 132 in connection costs over the next six months.
ESKOM EXPANDS SUPPORT FOR ROOFTOP SOLAR USERS
In addition to the extension, Eskom revealed plans to introduce a prepaid metering option for residential customers who install rooftop solar systems. This would allow households to maintain prepaid electricity while integrating solar power solutions.
The utility indicated that customers can either keep their current metering systems or opt for a smart meter installation at no cost, while still benefiting from the waiver for systems within the 50kW threshold. The prepaid option is currently being tested, with a broader rollout expected once implementation requirements are finalised.
GROWING SHIFT TO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
The move comes as more South African households and businesses adopt alternative energy solutions such as rooftop solar. Eskom reiterated its commitment to supporting this transition while ensuring safety and compliance within the national electricity grid.
According to regulations, all SSEG systems under 100kW connected to the grid must be registered with the relevant electricity supplier, either Eskom or a local municipality. This process ensures that installations are properly recorded, safely connected, and effectively integrated into the broader network.
To encourage compliance, Eskom will continue waiving registration-related costs for eligible systems until the end of September 2026.
Customers looking to register their systems are required to submit key documentation, including a Certificate of Compliance (CoC), an inverter test certificate, and a test report for the installation. These approvals must be completed by a professional registered with the Department of Employment and Labour, helping to streamline the process and reduce costs.
Further details on SSEG registration are available through Eskom’s official platforms.
