Motorists in South Africa are being urged to check and renew their vehicle and driving licence documents ahead of the busy Easter long weekend to avoid fines, delays, or being turned away at roadblocks.

The warning comes from the Road Traffic Management Corporation, which says many drivers may unknowingly be travelling with expired documentation.

Over 800 000 Documents Expiring

The RTMC estimates that around 700 000 vehicle licence discs and 128 080 driving licence cards have expired or will expire before the Easter weekend, which runs from 3 to 6 April 2026.

Motorists are encouraged to renew their documents early to avoid last-minute stress and long queues.

Gauteng Leads In Expiring Documents

Gauteng has the highest number of expiring documents, followed by the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Other affected provinces include Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, North West, Free State, and the Northern Cape.

Online Renewals And Limitations

Vehicle licence discs can be renewed online via the eNatis system, with delivery typically taking three to five working days. Since its launch in 2022, more than six million licence discs have been processed through the platform.

However, online renewal for driving licence cards remains limited. Currently, only motorists in Gauteng, as well as Gqeberha and Kariega in the Eastern Cape, can book renewal appointments online.

Drivers in other provinces are still required to visit their nearest testing centres in person.

Rollout Still Dependent On Provinces

The RTMC noted that while the online system was introduced in 2022, its expansion has been gradual and depends on provincial transport authorities adopting the system.

Motorists are advised to act early to avoid disruptions during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
