PRETORIA — Henke Pistorius, the father of convicted murderer and former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, has broken his silence regarding his son’s character and his own future following one of South Africa’s most high-profile criminal tragedies.
Speaking with conviction, Henke Pistorius described his son as a “quality man” with his life ahead of him, maintaining that the values he instilled in Oscar during his upbringing were successfully learned. The 72-year-old father appeared dismissive of the public scrutiny that has followed the family since the 2013 killing of Reeva Steenkamp, stating that community perceptions do not matter to him.
The case, which gripped the world for over a decade, began on Valentine’s Day 2013 when the double-amputee athlete fired four shots through a locked bathroom door at his Pretoria home. The shots killed Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and law graduate. While the athlete claimed he believed an intruder was in the house, he was eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to over 13 years in prison.
The elder Pistorius also revealed a previously undisclosed and brief encounter with the late Barry Steenkamp, Reeva’s father. The meeting took place in a courthouse bathroom during the legal proceedings. According to Henke, he suggested to Mr. Steenkamp that they should discuss the tragedy, but the conversation never progressed further. Barry Steenkamp passed away without the two fathers ever bridge the gap between their families.
Shifting his focus away from the legal battles of the past, Henke Pistorius announced he is now spearheading an ambitious agricultural project. He claims to be working on the largest venture of its kind in Africa, centered on the cultivation of moringa trees. His goal is to plant 44 million trees over the next decade, focusing on the plant’s health benefits and its capacity for carbon sequestration.
This shift toward environmental and agricultural work reflects a broader attempt by the family to move forward following Oscar’s release on parole in January 2024. The former athlete is currently serving the remainder of his sentence under strict parole conditions after spending more than half of his term behind bars.
The case of Oscar Pistorius remains a deeply emotive subject in South Africa, highlighting issues of gender-based violence, firearm safety, and the justice system. The elder Pistorius’s comments suggest a family remains steadfast in their support of the former star, despite the global condemnation that followed the shooting.
As the Pistorius family seeks to rebuild their lives through faith and new business ventures, the legacy of the tragedy continues to resonate. The lack of closure between the two fathers, underscored by the brief meeting in a courthouse toilet, remains a poignant symbol of the irreparable rift caused by that night in February 2013.
