Johannesburg now has a deputy mayor for the first time, with ANC regional chairperson and Finance MMC Loyiso Masuku elected unopposed to the newly created position. The vote took place on Thursday during council proceedings in the city.
The deputy mayor role has been established to strengthen executive continuity in South Africa’s economic hub. Masuku’s former position as Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance has been dissolved and incorporated into the new office, consolidating both fiscal and executive responsibilities.
Her election comes as Mayor Dada Morero faces a motion of no confidence, with a vote expected later on Thursday. Morero previously survived a similar challenge after the ANC successfully pushed for a secret ballot under council rules, shielding councillors from party pressure.
However, council regulations do not explicitly allow secret ballots in removal proceedings, raising legal questions that have resurfaced during the current process.
Council proceedings are ongoing.
