Three suspects were shot and killed by police on the N12 on Wednesday after a high speed chase that followed an armed robbery in Tokoza.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the suspects had robbed a courier vehicle shortly before officers received information about their movements. The group was reportedly travelling in a silver Corolla.
Police located the vehicle on Kliprivier Road as it entered the N12 in the direction of Soweto. When officers attempted to stop them, the suspects sped off, resulting in a chase that turned into a shootout.
The getaway vehicle eventually stopped on the N12 between Xavier and the Soweto off ramp. Three suspects were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth was injured.
Officers recovered two firearms and a quantity of suspected stolen goods from the vehicle.
Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the coordinated response, which involved the National Counter Intelligence unit, the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, the Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing and several private security companies.
