JOHANNESBURG – South African Afropop sensation Winnie Khumalo has passed away at the age of 51. The Soweto-born artist died earlier today at her home after a brief illness. According to family spokesperson Tshepi Rakepile, “Winnie passed away after a short illness. This morning, she was not feeling well, and her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, rushed her to the hospital. Unfortunately, upon arrival at Baragwanath Hospital, she was pronounced dead.”
Born on July 20, 1973, in Mofolo North, Soweto, Khumalo’s music journey began at the age of 15. She quickly gained recognition with chart-topping albums such as Hey Laitie and Tshina Tshina, produced by the legendary Sello Chicco Twala. Her powerful voice and versatility propelled her to stardom, leading to collaborations with some of South Africa’s biggest artists. Before launching her solo career, she gained early prominence as a backing vocalist for the iconic Brenda Fassie.
Beyond her music, Khumalo made her mark in South African television, appearing in beloved series like Muvhango and Mponeng, as well as in stage productions and films. In 2024, it was revealed that her son, Thando (33), is one of the children of the late boxing champion Dingaan Thobela.
Despite her bustling career, Khumalo prioritized family, raising her two children, Thando and Rethabile, while cementing her legacy as one of South Africa’s most celebrated artists.
