Cape Flats traditional leaders demand land for initiation schools

Traditional leaders on the Cape Flats have called on authorities to make available tracts of land suitable for initiation schools.

Residents in Khayelitsha say they’re scrambling for land to use for this winter’s initiation season after the City of Cape Town began clearing bushes near Mew Way for a 73-million-rand MyCiti bus depot.

Chief Commander of Mdumiseni Diverse United Kingdom, King Zanomthetho Gawulana, says they have identified land in Delft .

“Leave the land that is in Delft vacant so that we can use that land and government must also assist us to get any other land that is available so that we can have enough land for our initiations in the Western Cape.”

Mayco member, Anda Ntsodo, says they’re working with communities and traditional leaders to resolve the issue.

“Definitely we want to get a permanent solution to this for an example in Langa there is a designated site some taps and toilets and other staff so we need to just identify the pieces of land,  get around the table, talk about it and sort it out as soon as possible.”
