NAIROBI, Feb 13 (Reuters) – The following company
announcements, scheduled economic indicators, debt and currency
market moves and political events may affect African markets on
Monday.

GLOBAL MARKETS
The dollar rose against the yen on Monday on relief that
U.S. President Donald Trump set aside tough campaign
rhetoric over security and jobs in a smooth meeting with
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with no mention of
currency policy.

WORLD OIL PRICES
Oil prices dipped on Monday on signs that global fuel
markets remained bloated despite OPEC-led crude production
cuts that have been more successful than most initially
expected.

SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS
South Africa’s rand and stocks strengthened on Friday,
buoyed by higher commodity prices and shrugging off a brawl
in parliament during President Jacob Zuma’s annual state of
the nation address.

NIGERIA ECONOMY
Nigeria’s economy is projected to have contracted 1.54
percent in 2016, according to a budget ministry document,
with Africa’s most populous country mired in its first
recession in a quarter of a century.

NIGERIA SECURITY
Boko Haram fighters have killed seven Nigerian soldiers and
wounded 19 more in an ambush on a road in the northeastern
state of Borno, the military said on Friday.

NIGERIA OIL
Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo visited the
oil-producing Delta region on Friday as the government
sought to broker peace with militants whose attacks have
hammered the country’s crude production.

NIGERIA AVIATION
The founder of Nigeria’s largest airline Arik Air, placed in
receivership earlier this week, accused the government of
seizing Arik to meet a political goal of creating a
“national carrier” and said he would challenge the move in
court.

GHANA ECONOMY
Ghana urgently needs to narrow its budget deficit, the
International Monetary Fund said on Friday, after the 2016
gap came in at 9 percent of economic output rather than the
Fund’s target of 5.25 percent.

GAMBIA POLITICS
Thousands of soldiers from West African bloc ECOWAS will
start returning home this month from Gambia, from where
long-time leader Yahya Jammeh was forced to flee last month,
paving the way for new President Adama Barrow to take
office.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC SECURITY
A top militant and three others were killed in Central
African Republic when a U.N. helicopter fired on fighters
advancing towards the town of Bambari, a rebel group said on
Sunday.

KENYA ECONOMY
Kenya has raised its tax revenue forecast for the financial
year ending in June 2017 by 8.7 percent as efforts to boost
collection start to pay off, officials said.

KENYA DROUGHT
Kenya declared a national disaster on Friday, calling for
aid to counter drought that is posing a major risk to
people, livestock and wildlife.

CAMEROON PROTESTS
Cameroon police killed two protestors and wounded 10 others
on Friday in the latest bout of violence in the
English-speaking northwest of the mostly Francophone
country, police and political sources told
Reuters.

SOUTH SUDAN POLITICS
A South Sudanese general has resigned, citing abuses by the
security forces against civilians and what he called
increasing ethnic favouritism in the military, according to
a letter seen by Reuters on Saturday.

SUDAN SECURITY
Sudanese security forces have found explosive materials and
foreign passports in an apartment they raided on Sunday
after a small blast detonated in South Khartoum, the
Interior Ministry said.
