A social media expert has returned to the witness stand in the ongoing trial of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, who is facing charges linked to the 2021 July unrest.
Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, is accused of incitement to commit public violence and terrorism related offences stemming from the widespread unrest that claimed more than 350 lives and led to extensive looting and destruction across the country.
State Focuses On Social Media Activity
The State alleges that Zuma-Sambudla used social media platforms to encourage and amplify the unrest. As part of its case, social media expert Emma Sadlier is currently being cross examined on her analysis of the accused’s online posts.
During her testimony, Sadlier clarified that certain phrases used by Zuma-Sambudla, including “we see you”, are not inherently linked to violence and can often be interpreted as expressions of recognition or support.
Defence Maintains Political Motive
Zuma-Sambudla has denied any wrongdoing, with her political party arguing that the case against her is politically motivated. The party has described the trial as a witch hunt, maintaining that there is no direct evidence linking her actions to the violence.
Trial Continues
The case remains ongoing as the court continues to hear evidence and testimony. The outcome is expected to play a significant role in determining accountability for the 2021 unrest, one of the most turbulent periods in recent South African history.
