A peaceful election is expected in Zimbabwe on Monday – despite what is expected to be a close result.
Observer teams, commentators and ordinary citizens have lauded the authorities for a lack of intimidation and violence against opposition parties and their members… quite different from polls in the recent past.
Political analyst, David Moore has been monitoring the political situation in Bulawayo, the country’s second largest city, during the election campaign.
He says, “We’ve seen contestation over the ballot papers and the voters roll, but of course the MDC is going into these elections full-fledged and very confident. There’s a 3% gap at least from the last poll, so it’s going to be close, but it’s peaceful. People are going about with their business, so aside from the economic difficulties I think people are fairly, confident that it’s going to be a free and fair election.”
