Fikile Mbalula, Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC), extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late minister, Tito Mboweni.
Mboweni, who passed away at the age of 65 after a brief illness, was characterised as a towering figure in South Africa’s economic landscape.
Mbalula described Mboweni’s passing as a profound loss for South Africa, highlighting his dedication as a public servant who played a crucial role in shaping the country’s economic policies.
He further emphasised that Mboweni’s leadership, intellect, and unwavering commitment to the nation left an indelible mark on South Africa.
Mboweni’s career in public service took off when he became the first Black governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) in 1999, succeeding Chris Stals.
His tenure, marked by key economic reforms, earned him a reputation as a transformative figure in the country’s evolving economy.
Over his decade-long service, Mboweni focused on maintaining financial stability, which was crucial during a period of global economic change.
His efforts were instrumental in steering the country through challenging economic times, earning him widespread respect and admiration.
Before leading the SARB, Mboweni had also served as Minister of Labour in Nelson Mandela’s Cabinet, where he helped shape policies that supported the new democracy.
Mboweni’s contributions to South Africa’s growth continued when he became the Minister of Finance in 2018.
Known for his pragmatic approach and use of social media to communicate his thoughts and decisions, Mboweni did not shy away from controversy.
His tenure as finance minister was marked by efforts to balance fiscal discipline with the need to support economic growth, particularly in the face of persistent budget deficits and slow growth.
Mbalula’s tribute reflects the deep appreciation many South Africans feel for Mboweni’s lifelong contributions to the nation.
He noted that Mboweni’s legacy of economic stability and growth will be remembered with gratitude.
In closing, Mbalula expressed his hope that Mboweni’s loved ones would find strength during this time of mourning.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Comrade Tito Mboweni.
