Johannesburg, South Africa —  Emeris Sandton officially opened its doors this week in what is widely regarded as Africa’s richest square mile, unveiling a R420 million, 47,000-square-metre mega campus in the heart of Johannesburg.

The development represents one of the largest private investments in tertiary education in Gauteng and consolidates The Independent Institute of Education’s Varsity College Sandton and IIE Vega School Bordeaux under one campus. The new institution now operates as Emeris and Vega School at Emeris Sandton.

With this expansion, Emeris now runs ten contact campuses and one online centre across South Africa’s major metropolitan areas. The institution educated approximately 30,000 students in 2025, further cementing its footprint in the private higher education sector.

The campus is designed to accommodate 9,000 students in its first phase, with plans to expand capacity to more than 13,000 students in the coming years. Facilities include an indoor sports centre, IT laboratories, interactive classrooms, a virtual reality studio, a podcast studio, a green screen room, a photo laboratory and advanced collaboration spaces.

Geoff Whyte, Chief Executive Officer of ADvTECH, described the opening as a milestone for higher education in South Africa. He said the consolidation of brands under the Emeris identity signals a renewed commitment to what the group calls “elevating excellence” in private tertiary education.

Emeris leadership says the campus model prioritises smaller class sizes, industry-active lecturers, AI-enabled learning technologies and enhanced career services supported by employer partnerships. Louise Wiseman, Managing Director of Emeris, said the institution’s focus remains on preparing students not only for qualifications but for long-term adaptability in a changing economic landscape.

Wiseman noted that qualifications offered at Emeris are accredited to the same standards as public universities. As the Department of Higher Education and Training progresses toward formal recognition of qualifying private institutions as universities, Emeris is positioning itself as a leading innovator within the sector.

The opening of the Sandton campus is expected to strengthen Johannesburg’s reputation as a hub for private tertiary education investment while expanding access to modern learning infrastructure in Gauteng.
