The Congress of the People (COPE) has announced that the first memorial service for its leader, Mosiuoa Lekota, will take place on Wednesday at Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Soweto, Johannesburg.
The church holds historical significance in South Africa, having served as a key meeting place during the anti apartheid struggle and as a centre for political gatherings and community mobilisation.
According to reports, a second memorial service will be held in Bloemfontein on Thursday. This will be followed by Lekota’s special official funeral, categorised as a category two state supported funeral, which is scheduled to take place in the Free State capital on Saturday.
COPE acting national chairperson Pakes Dikgetsi confirmed that the date for the Johannesburg memorial service had been changed following consultations with the Lekota family and community stakeholders.
The memorial service was initially planned for Tuesday in Pimville, Soweto, but the party later decided to move it to Wednesday after discussions with broader sections of the community.
Mosiuoa Lekota was a veteran of the anti apartheid struggle, a former national government minister and a prominent figure in South African politics. He was also one of the founding members of the Congress of the People.
COPE is expected to provide further details about the memorial services and funeral arrangements in the coming days.
