As the Easter season approaches, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to the public for urgent blood donations. Increased long-distance travel during the holidays often leads to a higher risk of accidents, putting added pressure on blood supplies.
WCBS reports a sharp decline in overall blood stocks, with type O-negative in particularly short supply. This blood type is critical for life-threatening emergencies when a patient’s blood group is unknown.
Marike Carli, the WCBS public relations manager, called on both existing and new donors to step forward to help replenish supplies. One unit of blood, equivalent to 475 millilitres, can save up to three lives, highlighting the vital role of donors in the community.
Who Can Donate
- Aged between 16 and 75 years
- Weigh 50 kilograms or more
- Medically healthy
- Lead a safe lifestyle
Donors are also advised to eat a substantial meal three to four hours before donating to maintain fluid and energy levels.
All contributions will go directly towards supporting patients across the Western Cape. For more information or to locate the nearest donation clinic, visit wcbs.org.za or WhatsApp 060 549 7244.
The WCBS emphasises that public support is essential to ensure adequate blood stocks during the busy holiday season and beyond.
