Firefighters are continuing efforts to contain a blaze that has devastated the Botha Sigcau Building in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
The fire, which broke out on Tuesday evening, has engulfed the historic structure that houses nine government departments, severely disrupting services in the area.
Initial reports indicate that 10 of the building’s 11 floors have been completely gutted, with only parts of the first floor sustaining partial damage.
Named after the late Amapondo king, Botha Sigcau, the building is regarded as a heritage site, making the destruction particularly significant.
Officials from the provincial government’s executive are expected to visit the site to assess the extent of the damage and determine the next steps.
King Sabata Dalindyebo District Municipality spokesperson Olwethu Mabovula said the destruction appears to be extensive, noting that little remains of the structure.
Eastern Cape Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Siphokazi Lusithi is also expected to conduct a full structural assessment, as the building falls under her department’s responsibility.
Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the fire, as emergency teams remain on site working to bring the situation under control.
