What is heading into Pretoria’s skies at AAD 2026 this week?
PRETORIA — Drones, military flying displays and simulated battlefield scenarios are among the attractions planned for the Africa Aerospace and Defence exhibition at Air Force Base Waterkloof this week. Running from 16 to 20 September, AAD 2026 will give visitors a closer look at technologies changing aviation and military operations.
Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga said 287 exhibitors and 33 countries had confirmed participation. More than 30 000 trade visitors and dignitaries are expected, bringing international manufacturers, defence representatives and potential business partners to Pretoria.
Unmanned aerial vehicles will feature prominently in both the exhibition and flying displays. Motshekga said these systems had developed from a specialised field into a central capability of modern air power, influencing how armed forces train, plan and invest.
Their inclusion builds on AAD’s first regulatory clearance to fly unmanned aerial vehicles during its air show in 2022. This year’s programme will feature both large and small systems, alongside specialised innovation hubs showcasing developments across the aerospace and defence industries.
For the public, the programme also includes demonstrations intended to explain the work of the armed forces. SANDF chief General Rudzani Maphwanya said soldiers would stage simulated battlefield scenarios, while the South African Air Force has promised flying displays.
Organisers also aim to host approximately 12 000 learners from all nine provinces over the weekend. The youth programme is intended to introduce them to technology, educational opportunities and careers in the sector.
Beyond the displays, government is positioning the exhibition as a platform for investment, industrial partnerships and defence diplomacy. Motshekga said the event supports tourism, local procurement and employment, with ambitions to increase its economic contribution.
Held under the theme “Africa’s Gateway to Defence and Aerospace Collaboration”, AAD brings the public spectacle and the business agenda together: visitors can see the equipment, while industry participants explore the partnerships behind its development and use.
