A minibus taxi driver was attacked on Thursday while operating near Maponya Mall in Soweto. The driver was forced out of his vehicle, assaulted, had his money stolen, and saw the taxi set on fire.
Witnesses said the attackers were angered by the driver operating in the area during ongoing protests following Wednesday night’s fatal incident, in which an e-hailing driver was killed and another injured.
Earlier, a convoy of e-hailing drivers staged a peaceful drive-by protest past community members gathered outside the mall. In response, residents blocked nearby roads with rocks, disrupting taxi and e-hailing services and suspending trading at the mall.
The community is demanding that disputes between the taxi and e-hailing sectors be resolved and that security measures be improved to safeguard shoppers and staff.
Police and metro officials remained on the scene to manage tensions and maintain order.
