TSHWANE – The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) student who was shot near campus on Thursday is still in hospital.

The 25-year-old was wounded in the chest and hand when he was mugged by three males at the Pretoria West railway station near the campus.

He was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after emergency services stabilised him at the scene.

TUT condemned the attack and is expected to meet with Metrorail to discuss issues of safety at the station.

“We will get an update about the injured student before the end of business but we hope he is making good progress. A large number of TUT students and staff daily commute to campus using trains hence our management will engage with Metrorail very soon to ensure the safety of all commuters,” said TUT spokeswoman Willa de Ruyter.

Police spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said they are investigating a case of attempted murder and robbery.

No arrests have been made.

Two more TUT students were also mugged in separate incidents on Thursday morning.

One of the students was stabbed and also hospitalised.

“We are all still shocked by what happened on Thursday. We condemn these incidents of violence and call on anyone with information that might assist the police to come forward,” said Ruyter.

She said TUT has sufficient security inside the campus to ensure the safety of all on campus.
