MEC for Community Safety has called on motorists particularly public transport operators to make road safety a priority.

A spate of road accidents have been reported this Easter Weekend.

Nkosi-Malobane says a lot of these accidents happened because of non-compliance with the rules of the road.

She says pedestrians also do not obey the rules of the road.

“We begin to see a high number of pedestrians who have been killed in our roads. We want to urge our pedestrians not to drink and walk on the roads. They must try to wear clothes of bright colour to avoid being the victims of road fatalities.”

Meanwhile, holiday-makers travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng can expect major delays Monday morning on the N3 near Mooi River in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands following service delivery protests.

Provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Zinhle Mngomezulu says protesters have set alight a petrol tanker which has caused a major disruption to traffic.

Mngomezulu says alternative routes have also been affected.

“Mooi River on the N3 both boundaries are closed. Protesters have burnt a truck – however – they are also looting a truck that is loaded with alcohol. The R103 is also closed – which is an alternative route to Johannesburg. We are trying our level best to interact with other stakeholders so that we ensure the road is re-opened to traffic.”

In addition, a bus driver has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol on the N12 near Bekkersdal West of Johannesburg.

The driver was ferrying church members from Orkney to Vosloorus east of Johannesburg when he was stopped by Gauteng Traffic Police for inspection.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson, Busaphi Nxumalo says, “The driver is going to be charged with exceeding the speed limit of 80 km/h and driving under the influence of alcohol. He is detained in Bekkersdal SAPS and he’s going to appear in court Tuesday. Let’s take charge and make sure that we all arrive alive to our destinations. Road safety starts with you.”
