A 16 year old pupil remains in critical condition in intensive care following a serious crash involving a scholar transport vehicle on the East Rand.
The incident occurred in Dawn Park on 10 March 2026, when a bakkie collided with a taxi transporting eight pupils to school in Boksburg.
The Grade 10 learner sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital, where she has been receiving intensive care for the past week. Several other pupils who were injured in the crash have since been treated and discharged after sustaining minor injuries.
The teenager’s parents say they are deeply concerned about her recovery, given the extent of her injuries. These include trauma to the spine and neck, a skull injury, swelling and bleeding on the brain, as well as multiple fractures.
Beyond her current condition, the family is also worried about the impact the injuries may have on her future in sport. The pupil is a promising basketball player who has already represented South Africa at youth level and competed in national tournaments. She was also signed as a young player for the Soweto Panthers and had ambitions of pursuing an international career.
Her parents described her as a dedicated athlete who consistently excelled in teams that achieved top honours in competitions.
Authorities have confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with the crash. However, police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving as investigations continue.
