South Africa is set to experience severe weather conditions on February 6, with strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall expected to impact multiple provinces.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for disruptive rain and damaging winds, cautioning residents about the heightened risk of localised flooding, travel disruptions, and infrastructure damage.
Coastal Areas: Strong Winds and Rough Seas
Cape Town and its surrounding areas are forecast to experience wind speeds exceeding 50 km/h, while fresh winds will impact the east coast. Additionally, the southwest coastline has been placed under alert due to the potential for strong winds and damaging waves.
Inland Regions: Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain
Central and eastern regions including KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, and parts of the Eastern Cape are bracing for widespread thunderstorms and heavy downpours.
KwaZulu-Natal is expected to be one of the most affected provinces, with scattered to widespread thunderstorms and rain throughout the region. Coastal areas face a significant risk of localised flooding. Pietermaritzburg will start the day at a cool 18°C, reaching a high of 21°C, while Durban will see temperatures peak at 25°C.
In the Eastern Cape, stormy conditions are forecast, with temperatures ranging from the upper teens to the low 20s. Thunderstorms are likely in central areas, while the south coast may experience light rain. Meanwhile, the Western Cape is expected to remain mostly dry, except for a few isolated thundery showers in some parts.
Further North: Isolated Thunderstorms and High Temperatures
Gauteng and Limpopo will experience unsettled weather, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms predicted for Johannesburg, Pretoria, and surrounding areas. However, certain parts of Limpopo, such as Giyani and Musina, are expected to remain dry, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s. Similarly, the Free State will experience stormy weather, with Bloemfontein forecast to reach 31°C.
Warnings and Safety Precautions
Residents in affected areas are urged to prepare for possible flooding and strong winds, particularly in coastal and central regions. Authorities have warned that travel and infrastructure may be disrupted and advise people to stay updated on the latest weather alerts.
